Program Description and Objective:

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Newton College is a comprehensive curriculum designed for non-native speakers of English. The College provides classes for all skill levels, from beginning to advanced. Beginning students will be introduced to introductory-level English with lesson plans that cover the cardinal language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Throughout each of these courses, grammar and vocabulary are introduced and built upon previous lessons successively, a process called scaffolding. Students will initially develop basic sentence structures, move on to paragraph formatting and eventually be able to write essays and discuss complex topics in their field of interests, whether its for academic or personal growth. Students looking to transfer to a community college or university may be interested in our TOEFL classes which prepare students with the required skills necessary for enrolling in these insititutions.

Ultimately, the ESL program will drive the students' educational pursuits and enhance their personal and professional advancement potential. The completion of this program is calculated based on each student’s ability, i.e., whether s/he needs two sessions, four sessions, or six sessions. The start date would be the first class of the enrolled period, and the completion date would be the last class of the enrolled period.
